Dry Needling Available at SA Wellness Centre

What is Dry Needling?

Dry needling is a technique used widely by myotherapists, physiotherapists  and massage therapists around the world to treat muscle aches and pain.

Dry needling is a treatment technique where by a sterile fine needle (single-use acupuncture needle) is inserted into the muscle to assist with improving function and decreasing pain through the release of myofascial trigger points (also known as knots in muscle).

A myofascial trigger point, also known as a knot in the muscle, is a group of muscle fibres which have shortened when activated but have not been able to lengthen back to a relaxed state after use.

What Can Dry Needling Do For You?

You may have heard of this treatment technique before but still unsure of whether or not this technique is right for you. Will it hurt?, How does it work?, Is dry needling the same as acupuncture?

These are common questions asked by patients when dry needling is suggested as treatment. Read on to find out the answers to these questions and familiarise yourself with the technique so that the next time it is recommended, you won’t hesitate to try it!

How fast are the benefits noticed?
Almost instantly. Some patients find relief and improved function as soon as they leave the consulting room.

Will it hurt when the needle is inserted?
The sensation is similar to a muscle cramp but very lightly. Healthy muscles usually experience very little to no pain at all.

Is dry needling the same as acupuncture?

  • Dry needling is a treatment usually used for pain conditions by qualified allied health professionals e.g. physios, myos and massage therapists.

  • Acupuncture is the holistic approach of treatment for the whole body, including body, mind and spirit. It can be applied to target all varying conditions, not just pain.

What are the side effects?
Some patients experience soreness at the point of the needle, as well as minor bruising could occur. This often disappears within a day or two.

Drew

Remedial Massage Therapist, Dry Needling & Cupping

Drew

Andrew started his current journey 5+ years ago. Initially completing a Qualification in Personal Training specialising in Corrective Exercise & Natural Movement. He has put a lot of the concepts he learnt during those first couple of years into his own daily practice, recognising his own restrictions and working on these daily, particularly mobility (which was restricted after working as a Carpenter for 20 years)
“I believe moving well is one of the key factors to improved health and wellbeing particularly as we age” he said.

After Andrew completed the Diploma of Remedial massage his focus shifted to providing manual therapy as the core of his business and providing advice on stretching and strengthening as an additional service. Thus, providing a holistic service. As a Carpenter selects the appropriate tool for the task at hand, so too he believes its about selecting the right treatment plan for each client.

Currently Andrew offers the following massage services below.

  • Deep tissue massage.
  • Myofascial release (Also advice on Self Myofascial release)
  • Trigger point therapy
  • Functional release cupping (a blend of static and dynamic cupping with movement) a great way to lengthen restricted muscles.
  • Dry needling (targeting stubborn trigger points and areas of pain & restriction)
  • Range of movement testing (to determine where your restricted)
  • Corrective exercise (to regain balance by stretching tight muscles and strengthening weak ones. Also addressing postural issues)

Of all the reasons why, you will want to see Andrew as a Remedial massage therapist, the number one reason is fundamentally because your seeking “CHANGE”

To CHANGE the way you feel & To CHANGE the way you move
It may sound like a pretty basic concept but the beauty with this approach. change is measurable; therefore, we can track your progress, look at what is working and alter what isn’t.

“I believe that if the stressors are removed or reduced and given the right environment the body will in most cases heal itself over time, or at least achieve measurable gains. That is where, as a manual therapist I look for those stressors, restrictions, things that are causing pain and/or restriction and provide the appropriate treatment for your situation”.

“I do not consider what I do as working for a living, as I enjoy the journey, helping others to move freer with reduced pain. Learning all I can about my chosen field and celebrating my clients wins.”

When Andrew is not in the clinic or studying, he enjoy bodyweight & mobility training, or otherwise known as Natural Movement Practice (MovNat). Also spending time out in Nature.

Harley

Myotherapist

Harley

I began studying a Bachelor of Health Science – Myotherapy to help not only myself but others in healing their bodies from a variety of musculoskeletal injuries and conditions. My focus with my clients is to reduce pain, improve the quality of function in muscles and joints, and client education. My interests lay in acute and chronic conditions of the musculoskeletal system, and I can utilise a variety of techniques such as cupping, dry needling, and joint mobilisation to list a few in the treatment and care of my clients.

My background is sports and being a soccer player for nearly two decades now has influenced me to follow this career path. I have always been interested in taking the best care of my own body from a recovery point of view and that has led to an interest in helping others with their own recovery and management of injuries.
